The Absent Minded Professor

Courage & Comedy

October 27, 2015 Keegan Chambers
Gluten-free Crepes

Post gluten-free banana Nutella crepes in the East Village, I realized that there was a UCB comedy show nearby that I wanted to see at 8pm, and 9:30pm, and 11pm. Go big or go home right? So, with a handful of hours to kill, I headed to Soho. I had no idea what I was in for.

It’s absolutely beautiful there! Cobblestone roads, luxury shopping, and… Kelly Cutrone’s People’s Revolution office. Oh yea. I texted my dear friend Jesse Hazen, who has met her before. “Would it be wildly inappropriate for me to drop by Peoples Rev with a box of doughnuts?” His response: “BAHAHAHHA OMG! This is the BEST message I have received in years!” Then he dared me. So obviously I had to do it. I’d heard of this bake shop that made cronuts (cross between a doughnut and a croissant – yea) but they’d run out earlier in the morning so I settled for 20 madeleines and a couple gluten-free cookies – just in case. Had to cover all my bases, ya know? And that was it, I couldn’t turn back. What would I have done, eaten them all myself? Out of the question. So I located her office, buzzed up, “Hi I’m here with a delivery from Dominique Ansel’s Bakery” I’M IN! I’m so clever and sneeky.

My heart starts pounding to the point where it may actually jump out of my chest. Again, past the point of no return, I knock and open the door. Two beautiful young ladies sit at a desk looking slightly puzzled. I tell them I’m not actually from the bakery, but after chatting for a few minutes I’m confident I’ve convinced them I’m not crazy and they could eat the treats without fearing the possibility that they may be laced with drugs. By the way, I also attached a post card to the bag of warm, freshly baked treats that read: “Dear Kelly Cutrone & everyone at Peoples Revolution, thought you could use an afternoon pick me up! Love, Keegan Chambers.” I didn’t want to leave my contact info - I think that would have taken away from the kind gesture, but I did leave my last name in case they wanted to google me. Okay, they probably didn’t google me, but I’d like to imagine that they did and we’re impressed by my social media skills. Except twitter, my twitter is embarrassingly scarce :/

The rest of the afternoon was spent window shopping and then walking south on Broadway for 20 minutes before realizing I was going in the wrong direction. Oh well, a quick subway ride and I was at the comedy show. Drinking wine and laughing my ass off.
